Schedule your appointment at AutoScope today! Contact us online here. Give us a call: Some symptoms that can indicate that your BMW is having trouble with the Vanos system include: Loss of horsepower and torque Slow reaction to pressing the gas pedal Slow cold starts Limp mode or problems with the car computer after acceleration Decreased driveability Rattling noises or rough idling Inconsistent idling Poor fuel economy General Maintenance for BMW Vanos Systems Like all parts of a vehicle, general wear and tear occur over the miles.

How Vanos System Problems Can Be Fixed Unfortunately, fixing the Vanos system is not commonly done by the vehicle owner itself since the repair is typically quite difficult and requires experience and access to a variety of tools.

What did you clean them with? My plan, per the DIY, buy any brake clearer spray type. And flood it. Then spray it down with WD40 to get the break cleaner out. Did I get that right? Also, I have no problem buying the O ring kit for the these. Should I replace them or not? Part : Thx in advance DN. Originally Posted by CharlieBear. Put a link below, that will probably stop once he's out. Will be documenting the installation with pics, once I receive and get a chance to install. Are you sure? Not trying to nitpick, but, when you say "infinitely adjustable", I dont think thats correct.

It can only go so far one way or the other. Just trying to stay on track, not trying to be a dk. I am assuming we mean "variably adjustable"? No you can't repair them. You can buy used and save some money.

Been a while since I have been on here, lol. If the seals are worn out the intake cam will not advance and the performance from the engine is greatly reduced in the midrange, but there will be no error codes. Yes you're correct; I should have said continuously adjustable. Bookmarks Bookmarks Digg del. All times are GMT The more angular adjustment is exerted on the camshaft.

This angular adjustment is what controls the overlap between the intake and exhaust valves. Often called Single VANOS , this setup only affected the position of the intake valves while the exhaust side was linked via a chain sprocket setup. As you step on the gas pedal and start moving through the RPM range, the solenoid is activated, pushing the oil through the system.

With the rising oil pressure, the VANOS gear starts inserting itself between the cam gear and the cam. By doing so, the overlap between the intake and exhaust valve is reduced, allowing for maximum power. Now imagine how many times the solenoid pushes that gear in and out of the camshaft during an average drive?

The VANOS solenoid opens, allowing the helical gear cup to push forward and change the orientation of the cam in relation to the gear a number of degrees. The fact that those solenoids are working hard day in, day out means that the whole system has a limited lifespan.

There are several symptoms to look out for:. There are plenty of cheap replacement solenoids or even entire systems that often come from China. Although affordable, installing these components is an excellent way to cause a whole slew of other issues.
