Women, peace and security. UN Policing. The goal of international civilian peace missions is to ensure long-term security. Taken together, these events present a de facto blueprint of German plans to build military capabilities from which a future German contribution to peacekeeping will be drawn. This "second birth" of the Bundeswehr is designed to give a modest but potent capability to project military forces and operate as a key ally in future coalition operations beyond Germany's border.

Since its foundation, the UN has conducted over 70 peace missions itself and mandated many others through the Security Council.

This shows the importance of UN peace missions, but also poses significant challenges to the system as regards planning, conducting and concluding missions. Conflicts are now mainly of an internal nature and involve a large number of different stakeholders, thus necessitating a multidimensional approach to peace missions.

Alongside purely military peacekeeping tasks, such as safeguarding and monitoring borders and protecting the civilian population, these operations therefore also assume a wide range of civilian duties.
